Hitchcock Classics
SHADOW OF A DOUBT
Friday, February 10, 7:00 pm
Saturday, February 11, 2:30 & 7 pm
The master of suspense
returns to the Capitol Theater! What starts out as a charming
portrait of idyllic small-town life gradually darkens into one of
director Alfred Hitchcock’s most devastating thrillers. Teenager Teresa
Wright’s romantic illusions about her beloved Uncle Charlie (Joseph
Cotten) are gradually shattered by the suspicion he may be the
diabolical Merry Widow serial killer. Add to the mix a rewardingly rich
tapestry of eccentric characters (Henry Travers, Hume Cronyn and
Patricia Collinge are stand-outs in the cast), and you have one of
Hitchcock’s most brilliantly constructed films.
Adults
$5.50, Capitol Friends $4.50, Children $1.50.

| | The Amazing Kreskin
Saturday, March 31, 7:00 pm
With a showman's flair, a comedian's wit, and the capacities of a bona fide Mentalist or thought reader, The Amazing Kreskin
has, for 5 decades, dramatized the unique facets of the human mind, his
own! His very name has become an integral part of pop culture
throughout the world, invoked in comedy clubs, comic strips, print
stories, and TV shows. In 2008, Tom Hanks produced and co-starred with
John Malkovich in "The Great Buck Howard" which was fashioned after the
Amazing Kreskin's life. After
over 50 years of performing, Kreskin has a new cult following. To
quote David Letterman, "Kreskin should sue the producers of the TV
show, "The Mentalist" for stealing his act. He's the best mentalist in
the world and he's not acting!" Kreskin tells people things about
themself that only a close family member or friend would know! He lets
the audience hide his check, which if he can't find it, he doesn't get
paid! Kreskin offers $1,000,000.00 to anybody that can prove that he
employs paid secret assistants or confederates in any phase of his
program to help him perform his mentalist "effects."
Now, making his first appearance in Rome, NY, the famed mentalist The Amazing Kreskin will be seen live on the Capitol Stage! RESERVED SEATS ON SALE FEBRUARY 10.

contributions to the arts. Details to be announced soon.
| | Silent Movie Series UNDERWORLD (1927)
Saturday, May 5, 7:00 pmWidely
considered to be the first gangster film, UNDERWORLD was a surprise
success in 1927 and inspired the first wave of crime films, including
LITTLE CAESAR and THE PUBLIC ENEMY. Josef von Sternberg's
scintillating thriller starts out a hard-hitting crime saga as
envisioned by writer Ben Hecht, but quickly yields to the Sternberg
touch, becoming a reverie on fear and desire.
Cinematographer
Burt Glennon (who would become a master of film noir style), adds moody
light and shadow to the story of gangster Bull Weed (George Bancroft)
and his fiery moll Feathers (Evelyn Brent). Hecht demanded that his
name be taken off the credits, but went on to win his first Academy
Award for the story!
With live musical accompaniment on the Capitol Grand Organ. Short subjects to be announced. 35mm print from Paramount Pictures. Feature runs approximately 80 minutes. Adults $8.50, Seniors/students $7.50, Capitol Friends $6.50 Children (12 & Under) $1.50.

| | CAPITOLFEST 10
Friday-Sunday, August 10-12
Capitolfest
is Central New York's premier summer Cinephile film festival—a place to
see rarely-shown and newly-discovered films of the silent and early
talkie era, held at the historic 1,788-seat movie palace, the Capitol
Theatre, in Rome, New York, which opened in December, 1928 as a movie
house. To date, Capitol remains the only building in Rome
(population c. 35,000) constructed for the specific purpose of
exhibiting motion pictures. Although the theatre received an
Modernistic face-lift in 1939, the auditorium is configured exactly as
it was in 1928, and much of the original décor remains.
Included
as part of Capitolfest's silent film line-up is live organ
accompaniment for each film, played on our original installation,
3-manual, 10-rank Möller Grand Theatre Organ. Restoration work on
the organ was started in 2002, and since then it has been used on a
regular basis to accompany silent movies. Each of the silent
films will be accompanied by some of the world’s foremost exponents of
authentic silent movie accompaniment. Eminent musicians Avery
Tunningley, Bernie Anderson, and Dr. Phillip C. Carli will perform
musical scores on the Capitol Grand Organ for Capitolfest 10.
The goal of the Capitol Theatre is to
not only showcase vintage films, but to re-create the experience of
seeing movies as when they were new. All of the films at the
Capitol are shown in 35 mm prints on the theatre’s carbon-arc,
variable-speed projectors. Capitolfest prints are provided by
such archives as the Library of Congress, the UCLA Film &
Television Archive, Universal Pictures, the George Eastman House,
Warner Bros. Pictures, and Sony Pictures, as well as rarer prints from
private collections. The festival's line-up focuses on obscure
films that received critical praise in their time, but are now
near-impossible to see.
