Cinema Capitol will present the comedy-drama THE FAVOURITE from Friday, February 15-Thursday, February 21.
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, THE FAVOURITE is set in the early 18th century as Britain is at war with France. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfill her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way. The movie also stars Joe Alwyn, James Smith, and Nicholas Hoult.
THE FAVOURITE won 10 BRITISH INDEPENDENT FILM AWARDS, including “Best Picture,” “Best Actress” (Colman), “Best Supporting Actress” (Weisz), “Best Director,” and “Best Screenplay.” It was nominated for five GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS, including “Best Picture,” and was nominated for ten Oscars at the 91ST ACADEMY AWARDS, including “Best Picture,” “Best Director,” and “Best Actress” (Olivia Colman).
The OBSERVER writes “The performance by Olivia Colman as England’s dim-witted Queen Anne is a masterpiece of madness.” The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER writes that THE FAVOURITE is “A wicked delight.”
THE FAVOURITE runs 119 minutes and is rated R (for strong sexual content, nudity, and language).
