The Farmer Takes a Wife (1935)

Celebrate local history on the bicentennial of the opening of the Erie Canal with this classic 1935 comedy starring Henry Fonda in his screen debut and Janet Gaynor. Based upon the 1929 novel Rome Haul by Walter D. Edmonds and the Broadway play of the same name, The Farmer Takes a Wife is the story of Dan Harrow (Fonda), who works along the Erie Canal during the mid-19th century to raise money to buy a farm. While working, he meets Molly Larkins (Gaynor), a beautiful canal boat cook, and although Harrow wants to marry Larkins, she’s apprehensive about leaving the exciting canal life for one of a farmer’s wife.
