After a two-year pandemic mandated hiatus, the Rome Arts Hall of Fame will resume its annual events. Capitol Arts Complex executive director Art Pierce, says the Hall of Fame committee has selected six inductees for the class of 2022. The induction ceremony will be held in the newly renovated Capitol Theatre on Sunday, May 1, 2022, beginning at 4 pm.

The program will open with a presentation by students of the John Hayes O’Neill Studio of Dance under the direction of Rome Arts Hall of Fame members Stephen and Canan Jackson, performing from the classical ballet repertoire as well as contemporary and modern pieces.

The Hall of Fame began in 2005 to honor individuals (living or deceased) who have a strong connection to the Rome community and have significant involvement in the performing, visual or literary arts. The class of 2022 is the fifteenth group to be named to the Rome Arts Hall of Fame.

Lynne Angell
Lynna Angell was born in Penn Yan, New York, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Oswego. She served as a recreation therapist for New York State at the Rome Developmental Center wherein 1997, she was selected by her peers as employee of the year. Lynne’s involvement in local theater groups followed her husband and two children’s participation. She started out by assisting backstage and very quickly her artistic skills were put to good use as she was tasked to paint backdrops and set pieces which she continues to do to this day. Some of the theater groups who have benefited from her skills are Rome Community Theater, Capitol Theatre’s SummerStage, and Players of Utica as well as stage productions at Grace Church in Utica, The Other Side, Uptown Cinema, and Holland Patent High School.

John Flaver
John Flavor graduated from Rome Free Academy and earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Temple University and a Master of Music degree from the Catholic University of America. John performed as a professional clarinetist for three years with the United State Army Band (Pershing’s Own), seven seasons with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and two summer seasons with the Lake Placid Center Orchestra. His career as an instrumental music teacher benefited students in Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, Fayetteville-Manlius, LaFayette, and Westhill school districts. John maintains a private clarinet studio, performs in several area musical groups, conducts master classes and clinics, and also serves as the Syracuse area Onsite Audition Coordinator for the New York State Summer School of the Arts School of Choral and Orchestral Studies which is administered by the NYS Educational Department.

Ted Lenio
Ted Lenio was born in Rome and graduated from Rome Free Academy. He earned a bachelor’s in philosophy and religion at Colgate University and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from Michigan State University. Ted worked as a broadcast journalist in Aspen, Colorado where he also sang with the Dickens Carolers, a professional octet. Additionally, he was active on stage with the Aspen Theater Project and the Aspen Theater Company. In 1990, Ted traveled to Addis Ababa where he served as an International Baccalaureate secondary social sciences instructor in Ethiopia. While in Africa he conducted a community chorale and served as vocal director of a touring jazz septet that performed for the United Nations peacekeeping troops in Somalia. He returned to Rome in 2007, where he has been active with the Rome Community Theater, Readers Theater, the Herb Geller Memorial Scholarship Concerts, St. Joseph’s youth, and adult choirs.

Larry Migliore
Larry Migliori was born in Rome and attended Rome Public Schools. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education with a minor in Photography with concentrations in Graphic Design, Photography, and Sculpture from Pratt Institute. He earned a master’s in Synaesthetic Education from Syracuse University. He taught drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, and creative thinking at Rome Free Academy, as well as art classes at elementary and middle school levels in the Rome district. His teaching covered every grade level of art education. Larry also served as a full-time professor teaching photography and art history at Mohawk Valley Community College. He is a member of the Rome Art Association, the Syracuse Camera Club, and the New York State Art Teachers Association. He has exhibited his photography in area shows including Faculty shows in the Rome Public Schools and MVCC, Rome Art Association, Rome Art and Community Center, the Reach Center, the Photo Shoppe and Fusion Art Gallery, and the Syracuse Camera Club.

Lisa Matte
Lisa Matte was born in Syracuse. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Albany. Lisa joined the staff at Rome’s Jervis Public Library in 1997. She completed coursework, student teaching, and testing to become a certified school librarian while serving in several positions at Jervis culminating in 2014 with her appointment as director, a position she continues to hold today. While serving as director at Jervis, she earned a master’s degree in Human Resource Management through SUNY Stony Brook. Lisa serves on the board of several community organizations including the Rome College Foundation and the Rome Teachers Center. She is also active in the Rome Chamber, the Rome Chapter of the NAACP, and the Roman Runners.

Vicky Stockton
Vicky Stockton graduated from Montclair State University in New Jersey in two and a half years with a major in Communication Sciences and Disorders. While enrolled in a graduate program at Smith College, Vicky served an internship at the New York State School for the Deaf in Rome which in 1977, led to a full-time position from which she retired in 2021. During her time at the NYS School for the Deaf in Rome, she expanded the mostly non-existent music curriculum to include more instrumental and vocal music, drama, dance, movement, mime, band, handbell choir, storytelling, and related cross-curricular arts experiences. She was also called upon to tutor and teach additional courses in Latin, USA Citizenship for deaf refugees, American Sign Language, Global History, US Government, and Culinary Arts. Vicky is a world traveler having visited six continents. She is a recipient of the Kennedy Center Fellowship for Teachers of the Arts and a US Department of Education Fulbright-Hayes International Fellowship in Peru. She has also served on the Teacher Advisory Council of the National Humanities Center.

The May 1st induction ceremony is open to the public. Tickets will be available at the door and are priced at $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for students. A family ticket priced at $40.00 will also be available. Refreshments will be served following the induction ceremony.

The Capitol’s website contains a nomination form that can be used to nominate potential inductees. Nominations from the public are currently being accepted for the class of 2023.
