The first Capitolfest 21 title to be booked does not, as a matter-of-fact, have either Edward Everett Horton or Reginald Denny in the cast (don’t worry, there be several with each of them announced at later dates). It’s Paramount’s 1932 pre-code crime melo The Wiser Sex, directed by Berthold Viertel and starring Claudette Colbert, Melvyn Douglas, and Lillyan Tashman. Unavailable for many years due to rights issues, upon its initial release the movie was condemned by Harrison’s Reports for having “several dirty situations” and because “the whole picture is sexy.” It’ll be seen in a 35mm film restoration by Universal Pictures. Although Pete Harrison warns it’s “not suitable for children or for Sunday showings,” we are of the hope that the movie can be shown to our Capitolfest attendees without seriously corrupting their morals.
